I have long suspected that plants and animals praise their Creator in ways at which we can only guess. Imagine my delight, then, to run across this paraphrase of Psalm 104, in which whales “with finny feet/dance underneath the sailing fleet”. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
On Lebanon His cedars stand,
Trees full of sap, works of His hand;
In them the birds their cabins dight,
The fir tree is the stork’s delight.
The wild goat on the hills, in cells
Of rock the hermit coney dwells.
How full of creatures is the earth,
to which Thy wisdom gave their birth!
And those that in the wide sea breed
The bounds of number far exceed;
There the huge whales with finny feet
Dance underneath the sailing fleet.
God’s glory shall for ever stay,
He shall with joy his works survey.
